Merc making bid for rival CBOT

BY DAVID ROEDER Business Reporter

The market for owning the Chicago Board of Trade has opened, and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange is ready to bid.  The Merc has started talks with the CBOT about a merger or acquisition, two sources with knowledge of the discussions said Tuesday. Such a deal would bring a transformation to the city's futures trading industry, which has been built around an ingrained rivalry between the two marketplaces.

Pacific Exchange to Add Penny

By Cynthia Schreiber Dow Jones Newswires

The Wall Street Journal

The Pacific Exchange, whose parent PCX Holdings is being acquired by Archipelago LLC, said yesterday it plans to start quoting and trading options in pennies by the fourth quarter of this year.

The proposed change, which requires regulatory approval, would make the San Francisco market the first U.S. options exchange to quote and trade in individual cents rather than nickels and dimes. The exchange said it will submit a rule filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission soon and that it hopes to receive expedited approval.

Chicago Merc Stock Up on Merger Speculation

CHICAGO -- Shares in Chicago Mercantile Exchange Holdings Inc. soared as much as 11 percent to an all-time high Wednesday amid rumors the futures market might merge with its crosstown rival, the Chicago Board of Trade.  Long-simmering speculation about a merger surfaced publicly a day earlier with a terse statement by the Board of Trade's parent company that it had received "unsolicited, non-binding expressions of interest in a business combination." CBOT Holdings Inc., already poised to take the exchange public, said its board of directors was considering the proposal and cited the possibility of an "acquisition, sale or other transaction."

Traders, You May Not Have A Job Here Anymore

NEW YORK - Wall Street's embrace of technology has put tarnish on the once-glamorous job of stock trading.  Demand from hedge funds and other institutions for electronic-trading services and special strategic trading programs is forcing broker firms to reorganize their equities groups. Goldman Sachs (nyse: GS - news - people ) joined that camp Tuesday, when it fired 30 equities and convertible-bond traders and reassigned four other traders to sales positions.   Though it is less than 10% of Goldman's trading staff (including the traders at Goldman's stock-exchange specialist Spear Leeds & Kellogg), it marks a shift in Goldman's business model, a spokesman said. Indeed, all those sacked are Goldman traders and represent a larger percentage of Goldman's own traditionally gold-plated trader population.

Names hold key to wealth, Barclays claims

Forget hard work and good ideas, your name holds the key to your earning potential, according to a survey by Barclays bank.  Calling your child David or Susan could put them on track to a six-figure salary, it claimed today, just like high-earning stars David Beckham and Sue Barker who apparently have their parents to thank for their cash, rather than any sporting ability.  The "research" looked at 60,000 customers of Barclays premier banking service - catering for people earning over £100,000. It revealed a preponderance of the name Dave on its books, with the next most common male names John and Michael.

Present:

"The Future of Social Security – The Impact on US Markets & the Economy”

Thursday, July 14, 2005, 6PM – 8:30PM

Speakers:

Robert Z. Aliber, Professor of International Economics and Finance Emeritus, Graduate School of Business, University of Chicago

Randall Kroszner, Professor of Economics, Graduate School of Business, University of Chicago

Mark J. Warshawsky, Assistant Secretary for Economic Policy, U.S. Department of the Treasury

Event Description:

Much of the conversation surrounding the proposed changes in Social Security has centered on the effects on taxpayers and the solvency of the system. However, policy makers should also explore the serious implications for the overall economy and the financial markets. Specifically, what are the macroeconomic effects of the major proposals? What will happen to our banking and investment industries? Finally, will there be changes in saving and spending patterns that could influence interest rates and credit markets?

Please join us for a conversation with key thinkers from both the Bush administration and the University of Chicago, Graduate School of Business as we examine the shape and scope of these issues and their potential impact on U.S. markets and the economy.

John's Comments

Recuse or not to recuse?

Trading Technologies had a significant announcement yesterday about their deal with Calyon Financial.  It is interesting to note the second sentence “Due to strong hedge fund demand, Calyon Financial has decided to add to its client offering TT's innovative front-end and fast architecture as well as its API and FIX solutions that allow clients to customize their trading systems.”

While I was more interested in letting the world know about Russ Rausch’s future at Calyon, and rewrote the headline, I missed highlighting this very strong statement from Calyon about the nature of their decision to put add TT’s trading solutions.  Now you know.
