Trading center fading

Pacific Exchange faces uncertain future as markets merge

A pair of proposed mergers has cast doubt on the fate of the Pacific Exchange -- the descendant of the stock market that opened in San Francisco in 1882, now the city's last surviving floor for trading securities.

In January, the exchange agreed to sell its options business to Archipelago Holdings, a Chicago electronic-trading firm that five years ago acquired Pacific's stock-trading operations.  Just a few months later, Archipelago agreed to merge with the giant New York Stock Exchange, creating an alliance between one of the world's dominant stock-trading centers and an industry-leading electronic network.

What place the Pacific Exchange will have in that larger deal is far from clear. Officials of all three organizations are close-mouthed on details.
