China Demand Draws $50 Billion Into Commodity Funds (Update5)

June 22 (Bloomberg) -- Investment in financial products linked to commodities surged 10-fold to $50 billion since 1999 as China's economic growth drove oil, copper and coal prices to records, Barclays Capital said.

Banks have developed products that offer fixed income returns where the underlying asset is a commodity, Torsten de Santos, head of commodity investor solutions at Barclays Capital said. Investments could rise by as much as $50 billion again in the next three years, said Robert Greer, product manager for the Pimco Commodity RealReturn Strategy Fund.  ``Commodities used to be a market for hedge funds, now institutional investors, mainstream investors, see value,'' Barclays' de Santos said in Hong Kong yesterday.

Spotlight swings onto hedge funds ahead of G8

LONDON, June 21 (Reuters) - Lavish rewards mean financial managers are queuing to join them, regulators fear them and some German politicians describe them as "locusts" -- few it seems are neutral about the $1 trillion hedge fund industry.  Leading figures from London's hedge fund community, the biggest in the world outside the U.S., are being quizzed by a team of Reuters journalists in a two-day summit this week to unravel what is driving the industry and its trading strategies.  Hedge funds have expanded massively since 2000. Wealthy investors, who on average lost a quarter of their personal assets globally in the dot.com crash, poured money into the funds, whose returns stayed in positive territory as stocks plummeted and losses in traditional investment funds piled up.

Commodities stand on their own, amid dollar puzzle

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Undaunted by soaring global prices for raw materials, global commodity consumers and investors are paying top price in many currencies, instead of timing purchases to a weak dollar as they had done until recently.   Not clear yet, investors and analysts said, is whether the shift confirms that commodities have come into their own as a viable investment class, or whether it portends a bubble ready to burst.

Extended working hours at Eurex

By Jeremy Grant in Chicago

By disclosing last week that it would stop funding its US Treasury futures business in the US, Eurex was admitting publicly what everyone in the futures industry already knew: Eurex had failed in its battle with the Chicago Board of Trade.  Instead, Eurex said it would open a new US front in September by launching foreign exchange futures in competition with the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.  While the initiative may yet breathe life into Eurex US, the Frankfurt-based exchange’s 18-month-old US platform, a more significant development could help Eurex’s ability to compete globally with both Chicago exchanges: 24-hour electronic trading.

CFTC Sanctions Aurora, Illinois Man, David J. Mueller, for Unauthorized Commodity Trading

U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission Imposes Trading Ban and Monetary Penalty on David J. Mueller

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) announced today that it simultaneously filed and settled an action against David J. Mueller of Aurora, Illinois, charging him with the unauthorized trading of at least three commodity futures customer accounts in violation of the antifraud provisions of the Commodity Exchange Act (CEA) and CFTC regulations.  The CFTC’s order finds that, from August 9, 2002 through May 25, 2004, Mueller was President and sole trader for Market Integrated Services, Inc., a brokerage firm. According to the order, Mueller did not have written power of attorney to place trades for any of his customers’ accounts, and knew that he was not permitted to engage in discretionary trading in any customer account.
