Nymex approaches fork in road as it weighs expansion, IPO

The New York Mercantile Exchange has a popularity problem.

Not only do the rivals of the world's largest energy futures market want a bigger piece of its lucrative trade, but private equity firms, investment bankers and many investors covet a stake in the 132-year-old, members-only firm.  The Nymex is facing one of the most crucial moments in its history as it ratchets up its global expansion and weighs whether to accept an offer by equity investors to buy a minority stake, a move that would pave the way for a public offering.
