Dissidents vow to derail NYSE merger deal

Urge exchange to seek highest bidder

Two separate groups of dissident members are threatening to derail the New York Stock Exchange's proposed $3.5 billion merger with Archipelago Holdings Inc., arguing that the deal grossly undervalues their stakes in the Big Board.  "There is a lot of discontent," says Bill Higgins, head of the Association of New York Stock Exchange Equity Members Inc., which claims 400 paying members, about one-third of the NYSE's total number of seat holders. "It's a bad deal for us.

NYSE-Archipelago deal will bring together different cultures

One was founded more than 200 years ago, long before the computer, the telephone, and even the light bulb were invented.  The other has not even reached the decade mark and came of age during the go-go Internet era, where speed is measured in milliseconds.  The marriage of the New York Stock Exchange with the electronic network Archipelago Holdings Inc. brings two very different cultures together. But analysts believe each brings assets to the table.

Look for fallout from exchanges' changes

BY DAVID ROEDER SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST

The two biggest electronic stock trading networks have chosen sides. For Archipelago (AX), it's the New York Stock Exchange. For Instinet (INGP), the partner is Nasdaq (NDAQ). The landscape of exchanges is being rearranged in a hurry. What are the dangers for investors?

Brodsky: CBOE won't be pushed into a merger

BY DAVID ROEDER Business Reporter

Responding to a consolidation wave by financial markets, the chairman of the Chicago Board Options Exchange says he won't be pushed into a deal, and doesn't need outside help to expand electronic trading.  CBOE Chairman William Brodsky also said any acquisition his market pursues will be with the aim of diversification, and not adding to market share. Brodsky dismissed speculation the CBOE might acquire its biggest rival, the International Securities Exchange.

CBOT revs up its IPO plan

Underwriters named amid renewed talk of merger with Merc

By Kate Ryan

The Chicago Board of Trade is moving forward with an initial public offering of up to $260 million in stock, as consolidation sweeps the financial markets and revives talk of a merger between the Board of Trade and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange Inc……IPO preparations at the CBOT come as mergers are reshaping global financial exchanges, with two major deals announced last week: The New York Stock Exchange plans to buy Chicago-based electronic stock exchange Archipelago Holdings Inc. and the Nasdaq Stock Market agreed to acquire Instinet Group, an electronic brokerage. The moves highlighted the industry's shift to high-tech trading systems and the importance of scale.  Those trends boost the case for a merger between Chicago's two futures exchanges, which no longer dominate their markets.

Langone Seeks to Buy NYSE: WSJ

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wall Street financier Kenneth Langone is attempting to mount a bid to buy the New York Stock Exchange, a move that could potentially scupper its pending merger with Archipelago Holdings Inc. (AX.P: Quote, Profile, Research) , the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.  Citing people familiar with the matter, the newspaper said that Langone, the friend of former NYSE Chairman Dick Grasso, quietly reached out to a number of Wall Street executives late last week, asking them if they would be interested in participating in a counter bid for both entities.
